My Approach To Therapy

Individuals are complex. Our early history and attachment relationships have a profound influence on who we are – our identity, our passions, our relationships, the way we interpret and experience the world, and how we cope with pain and stress. We are often not aware of the layered ways in which our early history and life events influences us. While this influence can be positive and protective, it can also contribute to painful and unhealthy patterns that do not serve us well. To fully understand the present, and to make change, we must also look at the past. I am deeply motivated to help individuals understand why they do what they do so that they may experience meaningful and lasting change in their life and their functioning.

In my work with children the foundations of curiosity and compassion are integrated with play-therapy and parenting guidance. Play is the window to the inner lives of children. Through play, children express their sense of themselves, their understanding of their world, and that which may be hard for them. Play-based therapy is integrated with parent-focused sessions to develop a nuanced understanding of a young child. This allows me to identify the help a child may need, and provide guidance to their parents so that a young child’s nature can be well nurtured.

Change is hard. It can be difficult to know where to start. Choosing a psychologist is an exceedingly important decision. It is important that the “fit” with your psychologist feels right for you. With an understanding of my approach to therapy, it could be helpful to learn more about my professional history, experience, and services offered.

My clinical work rests on the foundations of curiosity and compassion, with the goals of insight and change. My experience has taught me that, at its core, therapy requires a strong, secure, and collaborative relationship, through which we can be jointly curious about your present circumstances and your past. Whether therapy is to address a specific problem that you have, to learn strategies for coping with negative thoughts or intense feelings, or to develop a deeper understanding of yourself, we are more ready to look at ourselves when we feel safe, accepted, and understood. With this relationship foundation, I apply my years of doctoral training and experience as a scientist-practitioner to assess, diagnose (if needed), and treat a wide range of psychological issues. Therapy with me is individualized, meaning that it is tailored to your specific needs. It also draws from, or integrates, multiple approaches to treatment. My approach is flexible and evolves as your needs change.

Education & Experience

I received my doctoral degree in School and Clinical Psychology from the University of Toronto. I am registered as a Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario to provide services for children, adolescents, adults, and families. I am also a member of the Canadian Psychological Association and the Ontario Psychological Association. Early in my career, I held the positions of Vice President and President of the London Regional Psychological Association. I also held Adjunct positions at Western University, in the Departments of Psychiatry, and Psychology. Through these Adjunct roles I have taught medical students, and psychology and psychiatry residents, and supervised students who are in the process of becoming psychologists. I continue to provide supervision, mentorship, and consultation to early-career psychologists. I regularly provide consultation to professionals across multiple fields of clinical practice on topics related to gender identity development, an area in which I have extensive academic, research, and clinical experience. I have also participated in documentaries aimed at understanding the experiences of children with gender dysphoria.

I have provided psychological services through clinics in Toronto and London, including the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, various school boards, and the Child & Parent Resource Institute. In the last 10 years, I have provided services through Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre and McKenzie Psychology.
